Three police officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who fled after the incident was located shortly later. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
